Preface: The Legacy Series is a collection of tiny profiles from an unpublished long-form piece about legacy and how people are remembered.

Queen Elizabeth II: Defined by Duty

Queen Elizabeth II. Until her death last year, the vast majority of the living human population always existed alongside her.

Desire must not stand in the way of duty. Netflix’s The Crown does a stunning job of dramatising the sense of duty that was thrust upon her when she ascended to the throne at age 25.

She is the job. Attempting to convey this sense of duty, her father King George VI tells her soon-to-be husband, “She is the job. She is the essence of your duty. Loving her. Protecting her. Of course, you'll miss your career. But doing this for her—doing this for me—there’d be no greater act of patriotism or love.”

The very reason you're exposed. In a scene from The Crown, First Lady Jackie Kennedy tells Queen Elizabeth: "A shy person will seek out someone strong to protect them. And a strong character is often one who enjoys public life—thrives on it. And then before you know it, the person you’ve turned to to protect you is the reason you’re exposed."
